Adaptive Yoga CPD : Disability & Chair Yoga

30 hour YogaPros accredited course for Yoga teachers. Blending four live online sessions & a two day London immersion

Is this you?

Perhaps you are already teaching but wonder what you would do if a disabled student came to class. Maybe you have had students with hidden disabilities without even realising it, unsure of the right terminology and not quite confident that your class is as open to all as you would like it to be.

Imagine yourself by the end of this year, feeling confident when disabled students come to your classes. You have the language, the tools and the knowledge to truly mean it when you say "this class is open to all" plus the confidence to take your teaching to care homes, rehabilitation centres, disability charities and private clients.

This is entirely possible and it all begins this September!

Join a friendly, supportive group as we take a deep dive into inclusivity, accessibility and chair yoga all through a disability lens. You will leave with real, practical tools to adapt your teaching with skill and confidence.

What You’ll Learn

Adaptive Yoga & Chair Yoga

The foundation of the course. We'll explore how to adapt asana and pranayama for adults with a wide range of disabilities and abilities. The main focus will be on chair yoga, one of the most versatile and in-demand skills for an adaptive yoga teacher. We will explore sequencing and modifications, wheelchair accessible adaptations, floor and wall based movement plus some creative prop solutions. You will leave with a complete toolkit ready to use straight away.

Adaptive Meditation & Restorative Yoga

Two of the most powerful and often overlooked tools for disabled adults. We'll explore how to adapt meditation and restorative practices for different cognitive and physical abilities.

We will look at ways to make them truly accessible, calming and how they can be a transformative practice for your students.

Understanding Disability & Awareness

Terminology in the disability space is constantly evolving. We will cover disability awareness, inclusive and respectful language and the specific conditions you're likely to encounter: physical disabilities, learning disabilities, hidden disabilities and more. This section will include person centred approaches, consent and dignity in practice. We will also have a guest lecture from a specialist in the field.

Working Across Different Settings

Adaptive yoga goes beyond the studio. Here we explore how to teach confidently in care homes, supported living facilities, day centres, community spaces, gyms, one to one settings and online. What each environment requires and how to show up with confidence, including specific considerations for delivering adaptive yoga virtually.

Adaptive Teaching Practicum

Put your training into practice, receive feedback and build confidence. We'll explore communication strategies, including verbal cues, visual and tactile guidance, working alongside support staff and caregivers. This is a safe, encouraging and judgement free environment.

Business, Ethics & Building Your Practice

Everything you need to start building a sustainable adaptive yoga career. From finding opportunities, marketing your services, insurance, DBS requirements, safeguarding and risk assessment.

Plus honest, practical guidance on self care and creating a teaching life that is as rewarding as it is meaningful.

  • “As a Day Habilitation program for adults with disabilities, we had very specific needs when looking for a yoga/movement instructor for our program. We needed someone who is not only kind and caring but also someone who is patient and communicates with our participants in a way they could understand. Lucky for us, Aya fits all of those areas and more. On top of taking the time for those with a variety of movement limitations in our program she also is very vigilant during the classes, always noticing those who may need extra support or an alternate move to participate in their fullest.”

    Lynn Policastro (Another Step Inc)

  • I’ve never done Yoga before and and very happy to have an instructor like Aya who made it fun to do. I get a benefits both physically and spiritually. My body has benefited and I feel great. Glad to be part of Yoga!.”

    Delton ( Yoga Participant )

  • “I enjoyed how Aya held the energy in the room, keeping me alert and relaxed at the same time! Her adjustments, physically and verbally helped me to not only find more ease, but to enjoy postures I normally struggle with.”

Valena ( Yoga teacher & Workshop Participant )

Hi, I’m Aya your tutor for this training,

I came to Yoga through dance, during my third year of professional dance training a module on dance and disability changed everything. It led me to New York where I spent over 10 years working for an organisation providing Yoga, dance and movement to adults with developmental disabilities.

Over the years I also taught in schools, women`s shelters, gyms, universities, day habilitation centres, community spaces, corporate settings and studios- working with private clients, athletes, dance students and people with a wide range of disabilities and needs.

I have loved it all and every setting taught me something different and have brought all this and more into this training.

I am excited to share this with you and see where it takes your Yoga teaching!

On completion of the training you will receive…

30 Hour YogaPros accredited Certificate
